Bluetooth wireless technology uses small form factor, low-cost, short-range radio links to eliminate the need for wired connections between computers. Up to eight Bluetooth devices can share data when they are within 32 feet (10 m) of each other. Your Xircom(R) Bluetooth Adapter and management software are your keys to the world of Bluetooth networking. Once you have installed the hardware and software, you can set up a personal area network (PAN) to connect your notebook to other Bluetooth devices via a secure radio link. Whenever your Bluetooth devices come within range of each other, communication can occur to automatically synchronize your schedule, phone book, and other databases and applications. With the "My Bluetooth Places" management software you can define and limit access of Bluetooth devices on your personal area network. 2) WHAT'S NEW IN THE 1.1 SOFTWARE RELEASE ====================================== - Compliant with Bluetooth Specification v1.1 - New user interface integrated into Windows(R) Explorer, replacing the Xircom(R) BlueView Application - Added Profiles support: Fax Profile (client) OBEX File Transfer Protocol (client & server) OBEX Object Push (client & server) 3) UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS ==================== If you have the V1.05 software already installed, it's recommended you remove the old installation before installing the v1.1 software. a) Copy the new Xbtrem.exe, xbtrem.dll and xbtinst.ini into c:\xircom\bt, replacing the existing files. b) Launch the uninstaller and reboot your machine as requested. c) Insert your RBT or CBT. Your Xircom Bluetooth devices will be recognized as a new device. Direct the "Add New Hardware Wizard" to the CD-ROM or downloaded file extraction location. Please note that Windows(R) 95 and Windows(R) NT40 are not supported by this software release. Furthermore, you'll notice that the Blueview is replaced by a Management system embedded in your windows explorer. 4) HOW TO RESET THE BLUETOOTH ENVIRONMENT ====================================== You can right click the Bluetooth icon and click "Exit Bluetooth Environment," then restore Bluetooth support by using Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities, Launch Bluetooth Environment. 5) RELEASE NOTES/KNOWN LIMITATIONS =============================== -Using Windows(R) XP the "Restart" prompt may appear before all virtual COMx ports are created. Do not restart at this time, select "No" and let all COMx ports install, allowing the machine to find all the "hardware" required. After you have seen the message stating Virtual COM_08 install, manually restart your machine. If you have already installed your Bluetooth adapter under XP and your installation appears unstable, select the Start button and choose Programs/Xircom Utilities/Uninstall Bluetooth Environment to uninstall your Bluetooth device, reboot and reinstall. -Windows(R) 95 and Windows(R) NT 4.0 are not supported. -Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or above is required. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or above is recommended. If an earlier version is used you may experience screen refresh and "right- click" problems, although your Bluetooth device is functioning properly. -Certain machines will not go into sleep mode with the Bluetooth Environment running. These are machines that are unable to go into sleep mode if a program using a COM port is open. This is a machine specific issue that is not related to the Xircom(R) Bluetooth adapter. If your machine is experiencing problems with entering sleep/suspend mode, right click the Bluetooth icon located in the Systray and select Exit. Once you "wake" the machine up, select Start/Programs/Xircom Utilities/Start Bluetooth Environment to use your Xircom(R) Bluetooth Adapter. -If you are having difficulties detecting a Bluetooth device (shows as Unknown, not enough or incorrect COMx ports, etc.), please follow the above instructions for resetting the Bluetooth environment. -Before installing the Xircom(R) Bluetooth adapter you must have the "Show all files" option selected in Windows(R) Explorer. This is found under View/Options/View or View/Options/Folder Options, depending on your operating system. -The Discoverable setting will only last for a period of two minutes. You will need to set your device for discovery by other Bluetooth devices by selecting "Discoverable" within the "My Bluetooth Places" application by right clicking the icon for your machine and selecting "Discoverable". -After selecting "Discover Device" or "Discover All" by right clicking the "New" icon and a device is found, you must highlight the device in the right window and select "Connect". The "slave" machine will establish the connection parameters, set within its Properties. You may have different settings for each "slave" machine connecting to the same "master" machine. -When the Xircom Bluetooth Adapter is acting as the "master" there is a "slave" limitation of 4. -One machine cannot act as a "master" while connected to another machine as a "slave". Scatternet is not supported with this release. -RF Shadow may be caused by two machines placed close together with the card/slots pointing in opposite directions. It is recommended to switch the machines around so the cards are facing each other, or move the machines further apart. 6) HOW TO USE INTELLISYNC WITH YOUR XIRCOM(R) BLUETOOTH ADAPTER ========================================================== Intellisync software from Puma Technology, Inc. is supplied on the Xircom CD- ROM and can be installed during installation or by using the SETUP.EXE file, located at the root of the CD, at a later time. You can choose to use the Intellisync software in place of Windows(R) Explorer or "My Bluetooth Places" to transfer files and folders between PC Bluetooth devices. You will need to install the Intellisync software on both PC's. If floppy disks are required for installation on other machines, there is a Makedisk.exe file within the \Puma folder that can be used. Once you have determined that Intellisync software is installed on the remote device, use the Xircom "My Bluetooth Places" application to view the remote device and select the Intellisync service. This service should be listed in the services supported by the remote device. Then click Connect. If the Intellisync service is not listed for the remote device, set up a connection in "My Bluetooth Places" using the serial port profile, and configure the remote device using the COM port displayed in the "Connected" window. To set up Intellisync authentication, use the Intellisync Connection Setup Manager. Select Start, Programs, Intellisync, Connection Setup. Or from within an Intellisync application (Intellisync Synchronize or Intellisync File Transfer), select Connection Setup from the Options menu. Configure required tasks in the Intellisync Connection Setup Manager. The Intellisync versions installed on the Xircom- equipped device and remote devices will carry out the tasks configured. You can change the default Security setting to allow Read/Write or Read Only access. The new settings will be in effect until changed. See Intellisync on-line Help for additional information. 7) PUMA INTELLISYNC SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ======================================== Puma Technology, Inc. does not support Windows(R) XP with this software release. The corresponding Intellisync screen must be open on each machine in order to use an application. Using the Puma Intellisync File Transfer software (Start/Programs/Intellisync/File Transfer) is required for transferring files between two PC's. If you use the Intellisync Agent, the Connection Setup Manager window must remain open, do not select OK. Selecting OK will disconnect your established connection. When using the File Transfer application, you can drag and drop files/folders into the Express box or "computer name". While the Bluetooth software will allow multiple connections, the Puma Intellisync software will only allow transfers between two PC's at one time. If using the Connection Setup Manager to establish a connection between two Bluetooth devices, the "master" machine will establish the connection. The "slave" machine must double- click the connection and set "Enable Connection". As stated before, this window must remain open. 8) XIRCOM(R) TECHNICAL SUPPORT ======================== ============================================== XIRCOM TECHNICAL SUPPORT ============================================== A complete listing of Xircom Support numbers, addresses, hours and languages is available at http://www.intel.com/support/9089.htm XIRCOM NORTH AMERICA: ---------------------------------------------- Web Support.......... http://support.intel.com Email Support........ http://support.intel.com Phone Support............... +1 (916) 377-7000 Phone Hours....... 7:00 to 17:00, Mon-Fri, PST Fax Support................. +1 (805) 376-9100 Warranty Replacement........ +1 (805) 376-9200 Shop Xircom Support......... +1 (888) 576-9700 ---------------------------------------------- XIRCOM LATIN AMERICA: ---------------------------------------------- Web Support.......... http://support.intel.com Email Support........ http://support.intel.com Phone Support............... +1 (805) 375-8117 Phone Hours....... 7:00 to 17:00, Mon-Fri, PST ---------------------------------------------- XIRCOM EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa): ---------------------------------------------- Web Support.......... http://support.intel.com Email Support........ http://support.intel.com Phone Support: (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) (Hours..... 08:30 to 16:00, Mon-Fri, (UK Time) Belgium 02 714 3182 Denmark 38 487077 Finland 9 693 79297 France (33)(0)1-41-91-85-29 Germany (49)(0)69-9509-6099 Holland 020 487 4562 Italy (39) (0) 2-696-33276 Norway 23 1620 50 Spain (34) 91 377 8166 Sweden 08 445 1251 United Kingdom (44)(0)870-607-2439 Phone Support: (Dutch Language) (Hours 09:30 to 17:00, Local time) (Monday through Friday) Belgium 02 714 3181 Holland 020 487 4547 For Warranty Replacement issues, please return the product to the place of purchase. ---------------------------------------------- XIRCOM APAC (Asia Pacific/Australia/New Zealand): ---------------------------------------------- Web Support.......... http://support.intel.com Email Support........ http://support.intel.com Phone Support (Monday - Friday) Australia (1800) 649-931 09:00 to 17:00 (Sydney time) Hong Kong (852) 2 844-4456 09:00 to 17:00 (Hong Kong time) Korea (822) 767-2595 09:00 to 17:00 (Seoul time) Singapore (65) 213-1311 09:00 to 17:00 (Singapore time) Taiwan 2 2718 9915 09:00 to 17:00 (Taiwan time) China (800) 820-1100 09:00 to 17:00 (China time) Malaysia (1800) 80-1390 09:00 to 17:00 (Malaysia time) New Zealand (0800) 444-365 11:00 to 17:00 (New Zealand time) Philippines (1800) 1-651-0117 09:00 to 17:00 (Manila time) Indonesia (803) 65-7249 09:00 to 16:00 (Indonesia time) Thailand (800) 6310003 09:00 to 16:00 (Thailand time) Pakistan (via Philippines) (63) 2-636-8415 09:00 to 16:30 (Pakistan time) Vietnam (via Philippines) (63) 2-636-8416 09:00 to 16:00 (Vietnam time) India (0006517) 830-3634 Manual toll free.
